About Vijanabora

What is Vijanabora?
Vijanabora is a Kenyan youth-led non-governmental organization dedicated to mental health advocacy and suicide prevention. Founded in 2022, we work to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and provide accessible mental health resources to young people across Kenya and Africa.
What does 'Vijanabora' mean?
Vijanabora is a Swahili phrase meaning 'Better Youth' or 'Excellent Youth.' It reflects our mission to empower young people to achieve their full potential through mental wellness and community support.
Who is ANA?
ANA is our friendly mascot - 'The Listener' - who wears magical headphones that allow them to truly hear what's in young people's hearts. ANA represents our commitment to listening without judgment and providing a safe space for youth to express themselves.
How is Vijanabora funded?
Vijanabora operates through generous donations from individuals and organizations, grants from foundations, and partnerships with corporate sponsors. Every contribution goes directly toward our mental health programs and community outreach.

Mental Health Information

What are common signs of mental health issues in youth?
Common signs include persistent sadness or irritability, withdrawal from friends and activities, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in things once enjoyed, and expressing feelings of hopelessness. If you notice these signs in yourself or someone else, reaching out for help is important.
Is mental illness a sign of weakness?
Absolutely not. Mental illness is a health condition, just like diabetes or asthma. It can affect anyone regardless of their strength, intelligence, or background. Seeking help for mental health is actually a sign of courage and self-awareness.
Can mental health problems be cured?
Many mental health conditions can be effectively managed with the right treatment, which may include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and support systems. Recovery is possible, and many people with mental health conditions lead full, productive lives.
How can I support a friend who is struggling?
Listen without judgment, be patient and understanding, encourage them to seek professional help, stay connected and check in regularly, learn about their condition, and take care of your own mental health too. Sometimes just being present is the most powerful thing you can do.
